Sunomata-juku Ikedaya Waki-Honjin is the residence of a descendant of Morinari Ando (1503-1582), a military commander of the Warring States period. During the Edo period, it was used as a sake brewery, and was used as a side headquarters during the Owari Clan’s visits to the daimyo’s residence.
The 130-year-old mansion of the famous family was rebuilt in 1893 and 1910, respectively, and old timbers from the collapse of the Noo Earthquake were reused, and Edo period zelkova beams and pillars can be seen.
In the garden, over 300 year old Dodan-tsutsuji azalea trees adorn the north side of the detached tatami room and the garden. Please enjoy the Japanese atmosphere of 400 years ago in the house of a famous family that has been in existence since the Kamakura period (1185-1333).
